May 08, 2003 - PC gamers love those crazy Sims -- always have, always will. Console gamers, on the other hand, were much more skeptical to accept EA's first console Sims title when it debuted last year on the PS2. What they didn't realize at the time was that EA didn't simply port the PC version and slap a plastic snap case around it. The publisher worked with series developer Maxis to completely redefine the virtual life simulation title for the home console crowd, and the end result spoke for itself: a game that offered simple controls and ripe personality without sacrificing the depth of gameplay that makes the Sims universe so great.
Once word got out that this console version of The Sims was truly a joy to play, gamers of all ages took note, and EA smartly went back to the drawing board to plan a follow-up title. And thanks to the dawn of this year's big E3 trade show, that sequel now has a name: The Sims Bustin' Out for GameCube, PS2, and Xbox. How exactly will our Sims be "bustin'" in this second Sims outing? According to EA, the new adventure challenges our virtual characters to get out of their homes and "bust out" into the brave new world beyond. Instead of simply catching the car pool ride to work and back every morning, gamers will actually lead their Sims through one of 10 new careers such as Mobster, Athlete, Mad Scientist, and Fashion Victim. Now that's bringing home the bacon in style.
Each career has multiple gameplay paths, and two players can even go at it together either cooperatively or in competition. We'll be wandering all over our cities via scooter or car as we scoot to work, home, and the always important social joints such as the happening Club Rub dance scene. Other cool, new locations exclusive to this second console title include the Love Shack, Shiny Things Lab, Art Gallery, Gymnasium, and Family Diner. There's also a pack of new characters to interact with, such as "Bling Bling" the party animal and Goldie Toane, the exercise-crazed psycho. If you had trouble juggling the complexities of a simple home life in the first game, prepare to have your social life explode like never before in Bustin' Out.
Time to get freaky with your Sims all over again.
Along with the slew of new locations, Maxis is packing the game full of more, more, and more of our favorite Sims objects. Now we can track down and earn groovy collectibles such as the Laser Light Show, DJ Booth, Climbing Wall (for those athletically inclined Sims), and High Dive. Maxis never disappoints with the many wacky and creative additions to its Sims universe, and Bustin' Out looks no different. Players can now customize their characters with things such do-rags and piercings, in addition to teaching them new moves like the crowd-favorite French Kiss, hilarious Towel Snap, and funky fresh Moon Walk. Afraid of what your parents will say to a full body tattoo? Save your money and get one in the Sims instead.
The gameplay engine will once again put our favorite Sims into the realm of 3D, and this time EA promises improved visuals such as real-time shadows in addition to audio effect upgrades and a brand new musical score. Sounds great to us. We'll be taking a closer look at the game and giving it a full hands-on playtest on the E3 show floor, so stay tuned to IGN in the coming days to keep your Sims cravings from, well...busting out.
