Wie die Überschrift schon verrät muss ich ein Referat in Englisch halten und zwar morgen. Ich wollte mal sehen wie es bei euch ankommt...
Das Thema ist Georgia - Atlanta - Blacks & Whites.
About GA: Its namesake (Namensvetter) is Georg the second of England. GA is 153953 square km large and has a border with Tennesssee, North and South Carolina, Florida and Alabama. The highest mountain is Mount Brasstown Bald with 1458 m. The most important rivers are Savannah, Altamaha and Chattanoochee. It has about 6.5 Million inhabitants and about 42 inhabitants per square km. The climate is very humid and subtropical. Now let`s talk about the history of GA:
Before in 1566 the first spanish settlers settled on the island Sainte Catherine, where today nobody is living, Cherokee Indians lived all over GA. (Karte) But it did not take a long time when in 1680 the british soilders occupied the island.
As you know the original 13 colonies signed in 1776 the Declaration of Independence and GA was one of them.
Also GA became the fourth state of the Union in 1788.
Now let`s quickly switch to Atlanta which was founded in 1842 at a railroad junction (Eisenbahnknotenpunkt). Originally Atlanta should be called "Terminus" or "Marthasville" but those names sounded too rural, so they choosed in 1847 ist present name "Atlanta".
After the Declaration of Independence was only a short time without war because there was the conflict between the North and the Southern States, so GA left the Union in 1861. During the American Civil War (1861 to 1865) Atlanta was occupied in September the second in 1864 and nearly totally destroied.
When in 1865 the Union won the civil war slavery was officially abolished.
Until 1870, when GA became a part of the Union again, Atlanta became the capitol of GA in 1886. There were a couple of other capitols before Atlanta, like Savannah. In that year another spectacular invention was made. I`m sure you all know it.... it is Coca-Cola!
Atlanta is since 1900 GA biggest city with today about 450.000 inhabitants in downtown Atlanta and over 3 millions in its surrounding area (Großraum).
So let`s talk about Atlanta and the rights of the black people....
Altough slavery was permitted by law there was a lot of segregation and discrmination against blacks. In 1908 the blacks were not able to take part in selections, they were supposed to sit in the back part of the bus and were not allowed to go to the same restaurants or malls as the whites. In addition there was a racial major named Eugene Talmodge in Atlanta in 1933 (you remember this date from history?!?). He did not want that blacks have the same rights as whites. After a lot of boycotts (remember the bus boycott in Montgomery) segregation and discrimination of blacks was officially permitted by law in 1954 by the supreme court of justice.
A lot of things changed since there was the first black major named Maynard Jackson in 1973 and the first black president of the city council in 1977. Since 1977 the blacks were always a majority in the city council!
Let`s quickly talk about Andrew Young how was a black major of Atlanta from 1981 to 1989. He is very famous because he was also the first black ambassador (Botschafter) and the first black man in the congress.
In addition to the success in the gouvernment there are four colleges only for black students (Clark, Morris Brown, Spelman only for girls and Morehouse, where Martin Luther King went to). Atlanta has also the biggest number of graduating black students in the world now.
If you take a look on the economic site you will see that Atlanta became very busy. There are a lot of important companies. If you compare 1950, when there was no one of the Fortune 500 which are the most important companies in the United States and 1990, when there were 21 headquarters in Atlanta, you see the big difference.
In 1980 happend another famous thing.... I guess you all know CNN? Thit is a famous american news station and its first transmission was just in 1980.
The next exiting event was in 1996, because the Olympic Games came to Atlanta (Foto).
On the opposite, Atlanta became a very sad title: It was one of the most dangerous cities in the United States in 2001!
Today, in 2004, you can`t compare the situation of blacks with the situation, for exemple in 1954 after segregation was permitted. The major is black and female, what was unthinkable in earlier times. The biggest problem is the rich white and black people moving from downtown to the suburbs. They leave the poor people there and powerty and crime are really close together...I have been to downtown Atlanta and there are only black people. I really looked like an alien between them. But they were not unfriendly to me! I would say it is no big deal if you are black or white... I talked to some black people and they told me that the situation today is more relaxed than before. But sometimes white employers prefer white employees and the black emplyers prefer black employees. And if you know that there are more white employers than black ones than you know what I`m talking about....
But I would also say, that not the blacks are the biggest problem, because there are a lot of illigal mexican people (about 800.000 per year) moving to GA. About 80% of them live in ghettos.
At last I have a comparison between 1960 and 1990.
In 1960 there were 487.000 inhabitants in donwtown Atlanta and in 1990 only 394.000. That is –19.1%! This is a hint for the rich people`s moving.
Also there were in 1960 38.8% Afro-Americans and in 1990 61.1% this is two times more than before. So the black people are not a minority, they are a majority!!!!
Fertig, also?
