Did't you say that you are in school at the moment? I'm a bit confused why you are here at the same time. Does every pupil at your college have his or her on computer? And can you use it during your lessons?

No, we get free periods, when we dont have lessons...
I usually use this time to do homework, but as it was the second day back, we didn't have any. So I went to the library and used a computer there :) - its ok about asking questions :)

We saw some errors students had made in the past.
They wanted to say "Can you come to my party?" - das soll "Kannst du zu meinem Party kommen?" geschrieben werden, aber man hat "Dose du zu meinem Party kommen?" - Sicherlich, musste man das Wort im Woerterbuch gesucht... hat man "Can" gesehen, aber das falsche Wort fur was man sagen wollte! :lol: - wenn das direct ins englische ubersetzen wird, bedeutet das "Tin-can you come to my Party?" :lol:

I could recommend you Nick Hornby's "About a Boy". Last summer there has been a film to that book, really good :)
I tried reading "The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" by Douglas Adams. I had already read the first book in German and we had the second book only in English. It was really difficult to read, the English the author uses is extremely complicated. So I quickly went to the next bookstore and bought the book in German ;)

Tolkien's Books are not difficult. "The Hobbit" is really easy (maybe because it's a book for children). The Lord of the Rings is written in an old-fashioned English, I needed some time to get used to it.

In our school the English course for advance learners had to read "About a boy". After all I've been told about it, it's a great piece of literature and I'm going to read it as soon as I have the time to.
I know and love the german versions of Tolkien's books and I would be glad if I could read them in the original version. Then I have something I can be proud of. :D


Maybe we could also talk about Music. I love nearly everything from the sixties to the eighties. In those times real music was played not such a noise as we have it in today's music bussines. It's just awful.
I've tried sometimes to translate the lyrics of english songs into german but some translations didn't sound so good... One example is "Carpet Crawlers" from Genesis (released 1974). I don't know if you know this song... but in their progressive time Genesis hadn't any easy lyrics so I gave up translating them. Listening to them is more fun. :D
 
An English thread, I see :) Why not, I can talk to you in English as well, no problem at all. I'm going to write my first English-LK test on wednesday, five hours - I'm really looking forward to the whole thing because I rarely don't have any clue how it could and will look like. The only thing I certainly now is that it will deal with shortstories and poetry, shouldn't be that hard, I think. But we will see (or at least I will do ;)).
 
I'm absolutely convinced that you won't have any problems with poetry, Graendal. I wish you good luck, though I think you won't need it. :)
But I think you wanted to say "really" instead of "rarely", didn't you? ;)

Dealing with short-stories and poems... so that won't be a problem for you, Graendal ;) BTW, what do I see under you Nickname? You're 18? Happy Birthday*searching for "nachträglich" in the dictionary* later! :)

@Sim_IQ: I've got a whole wall (not yet... but I'm working on it) only with lyrics of songs that I like or of which the lyrics catch my fancy was that the right expression? :ohoh:

I keep my favourite lyrics in a folder, at this moment it's rather thin but I think it'll grow bigger with the time.
I would say "fantasy" instead of "fancy".

Last year about the same time, when school had started, I began with clogging (?) lyrics onto my school folder... but there was not enough space on it, so I used the wall^^

Oh... on my school folder I had only some sentences and pictures against war and against G.W. Bush (my English-teacher hated him, you could hear that in every sentence in whic he mentioned G.W. Bush).
My walls are well decorated with some nice pictures and posters (I love art and I like to look at pictures, but not at those with eyes on them, because the could look back and I don't want that, especially not in my bedroom, I want to keep my privacy). :D

I would love to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show, I think I'm going to borrow it from a video store. And I hope I can get the English-version. I watched the first Harry Poter movie and "the Graduation" with Dustin Hoffman in english and I liked both films.

And I didn't really understand the expression with "fancy" but now I know what you meant with it.

Hm, well, I don't think that the Klausur will be very difficult, but you never know what the teacher expects you to write and to see in the poem. I just hope that there will be an extra task like 'write an own poem or shortstory' - should he ask us to do something like this, I will already have something in mind to fill some pages with ;)

Good luck for your first exam!! I´m in the Englics LK too but our first exam is in three weeks I think. So there is enough time left to read our book. I´m excited for the exam ´cause I don´t really know what we will have to do...

I love speaking English! Maybe that's why I am so active in "my" american board about my favourite author, Tamora Pierce. She writes books about females who wants to become knights and so on. They are fantasy books. I can only recommend 'em to everyone! Buffy? Sorry, but Buffy makes me sick, I don't like killing, even if it is vampires who get killed. Yeah, I know, knights are also "killing", but, this is war and in books you can't actually SEE the killing, you only read the plots.
If you like to read more about Tamora's books, you can visit http://www.tamora-pierce.com . There are even a few exerptions of her books, mostly whole chapters.

Thanks for correcting my mistakes. I often get mixed up with word-order, because I can´t help thinking of the german word-order instead of the english.



The first think coming to my mind when I think about music is my art teacher *g* That guy is weird. When I finish one of my pictures I write the artist and the title of the song I just listened to when I finished it down on the backside. (Can anybody please explain to me where I should have used a comma in my last sentence? :rolleyes: ) The next lesson the teacher tells us the grades we got for our work. When he reads out my name he always says: "What´s that for a band? I´ve never heard about it. And this title. Doesn´t mean something useful to me. Must be very worse. Modern music is so worse. Never listen to modern music. .. " And then he complains about modern music for nearly 5 minutes, even when I listened to Motörhead.

Oh that's awful...
Wenn du kein Englisch kannst, bringt dir auch google nicht viel, die Übersetzungen, die du bekommst ergeben gar keinen grammatikalischen Sinn, da alles Wort für Wort übersetzt wird.

If you don't speak English, google doesn't help you much because the translations which you get don't make any grammatical sense, because each word is translated not the whole sentence.

I think you have to say "...doesn´t make...".

Here's my version and I wrote "translations", so it's plural and it should be right.
"Doesn't" would be right in the singular version but here it doesn't fit. ;)

Mh, I just read a part of our new theater piece "Schule der Diktatoren" and now I'm too tired to make the rest of my homework. I should write a characteristic of Schiller's Amalia and an english essay about the importance of a novel's beginning, but I'm just too tired to do anything. Luckily surfing the internet is not that challenging so that I can still manage without my eyes closing automatically :)

Sometimes you're right, but the most time it just makes me vomitting... I hate it when you have to use google just because you want to be part of every discussion even in other languagues which you can't speak (good enough). That's so silly, I really hate it.

I can't agree with that.
Everybody sometimes makes mistakes and that's good so, because we can learn from our mistakes (not everyone does so but most people do) and make it better the next time we're confronted with such a situation. ;)

hey again everyone! Sorry I didn't stop by yesterday... I was really busy :S - had a lot of homework to do.

The phrase is "to catch my fancy" - you were right :) - i wouldnt have a clue about the german equivelent

I am at college, using a computer in the library and it is making strange noises that i am pretty sure it shouldn't be making... i think it's going to blow up :lol:

I've seen the "about a boy" film at the cinema, but I have never read the book...

@ Merlin - "don't make sense" is the correct. doesn't make sense is for singular...

"the sentance doesn't make sense" but "the sentances don't make sense"

Now I have a question for you all....
We were reading our german novel in class, "ich fuhl mich so fifty-fifty" and our german teacher didn't understand a german sentance and therefore couldn't translate it. So I was wondering (ich hab mich gefragt) if you could all help...?

"Da wird sie sich nicht noch kurz vor dem Ziel unvorsichtig verhalten"

Before that, it says "Na ja, die Paar Monate werden auch noch vorbeigehen" which we understood...

Perhaps the word "aim" would also be good. But as I don't know the context I can't really decide how to translate this.

Can you tell me the author of the book you are reading, perhaps I know his/her name.

Our theatre-teacher told us about that piece, maybe we're going to play it. Tomorrow we'll have a meeting and he said that he had some new pieces for us.....

It's 5.30 now, and I just got home from school... that's not normal :( But we'll have that every thursday :( And: when I left school, it began to rain, I had to walk home... so you can guess in what mood I am now :argh:

On thursdays I've got school until 17h (just a 3/4h break at 13h), and then I've got half an hour to go directly to my japanese lesson.... I'm leaving at 7.45 in the morning and get home at 7.45 in the evening....

hmmm im not sure. I understood all the words... it just doesnt really make sense in english compared with the rest of the paragraph...

This is the paragraph... i understand the paragraph except the sentance I wrote down lol

Vielleicht, wenn sie Ziel schreibt, meint sie "Das Abitur" ?

(Yes, I've seen it many times before, but it's the first time I really looked at it) And the song taht you quote here is one of my all-time favourites. This song is just great (for all thos who don't know what I'm talking about: It's the song "Bohemian Rhapsody" written and performed by Queen).

I think that you didn´t get too much homework. I had and have to stay in school for 10hours and I also get homework. So don´t worry, you will get used to do all that stuff, believe me!!

My grammar isn't the best so please tell me if I made a mistake.

My first English-Book was Buffy, 'cause I saw the serie and it helped me to understand more of the book.
Now I'm reading Lord of the rings but at the moment I need more thrilling stuff (is thrilling the right word?? I mean "aufregend").

I watch English movies (my first was Matrix) and my English is better. I work with Americans (I'm a trainee for office-clerk at sixt rent a car in Ramstein - yes, thats the little town with the biggest Air Base outside the USA).
Maybe I can help somebody to learn a better English and you can help me to make my gramatic stuff better (I think this is a wrong sentence, isn't it??)

Saturday I bought a dictionary: The advanced learner's dictionary form Oxford and I find it quite good. If I hvae the money to do so, I'll buy "About a boy". I'm really looking forward to reading it.

The book "About a boy" shouldn´t be too expencive. And perhaps you could go to a library they might have the book...

I don't think that I really need the dictionary for books like "Harry Potter" or "About a boy" but if I wan't to read the LOTR or some novels from Stephen King, I need some of the vocabulary to understand what is meant there. In most cases I understand it without using the dictionary, but it's also a good chance to improve my knowledge of vocabulary. And that can't be bad, can it?

I'll have to take a look at the "Stadtbücherei Saarbrücken" to find out if they have any English books, I often heard that their equipment is very good, so I think that I may find some interesting books.

In the bookstore I also saw the books from Michael Moore, which I love in German, in the original version. I'm gonna read those books soon after I've read "About a boy".
